We have switched all the lighting in our company to energy-saving LED technology. The exhibition rooms are only lit as required. This also applies to the museum showcases, the exterior lighting and the car park lighting. This is also activated by a twilight switch and a light barrier to further minimise power consumption. The air conditioning and ventilation of the museum rooms is energy-saving. No plastic packaging is used in our cafeteria and shop area, reusable packaging is used where possible and packaging material is reused. We make sure that all the electrical appliances we use have low energy consumption and are labelled accordingly; existing cooling appliances are operated with climate-friendly coolants. Waste is systematically separated, recyclable waste is recycled, printer paper, toner and ink are saved through consistent digitalisation and recycled consumables are used wherever possible. In the case of print and print media, attention is paid to climate-neutral production and FSC certification and corresponding compensation contributions are made. We reduce the consumption of hot water and thus heating energy by saving on hand-washing basins. We do without company cars and use public transport.
Our official consultations and meetings are held digitally (Teams, Zoom) in order to avoid business trips.
In planning:
– Renewal of the heating system with special consideration of the use of renewable energies
– Use of solar energy to support the heating system
– Installation of water-saving fittings
– Use of green electricity
– Consistent switch to ecological cleaning agents and detergents
economy
When renovating Haus Schulenburg as part of the faithful restoration of the entire ensemble designed by Henry van de Velde, original building elements and recyclable building materials were used wherever possible. For example, in the surfacing of the outdoor terraces, the sandstone and clinker elements in the façade, the windows, the parquet flooring, the brick pillars of the pergola, etc. In addition to the faithful reconstruction, this also saved fuel and reduced CO² and particulate emissions by avoiding the extraction, production and transport of new building materials.

The non-profit European Association of Friends of Henry van de Velde was founded back in 1999 by Prof. Dr Rita Kielstein and Dr Volker Kielstein in collaboration with the Belgian Embassy in Germany, the Flanders Representation in Germany and Bremen City Councillor Manfred Osthaus. We received the Thuringian Monument Protection Prize in 2012, the German Prize for Monument Protection in 2019 and the European Cultural Heritage Prize in 2024 for our achievements in restoring Haus Schulenburg Gera to its original condition and preserving it. In addition, the owner was appointed an Officer of the Order of the Belgian Crown by King Philippe of Belgium in March 2024.
