Salvador Allende Medical School
From 1947 to 1950, Haus Schulenburg was used as a hospital school for the Gera Forest Hospital. In 1950, it was given the status of a nursing school with boarding accommodation. The student nurses were accommodated in some rooms in the attic, in the neighbouring building and also in some other former manufacturers’ villas towards the city centre. Various conversions were carried out as part of the school’s use: Installation of accommodation, classrooms, sanitary facilities and the addition of a kitchen wing.
When the dormitory was built on the former park property to the west, most of the nursing students lived there. From 1961, Haus Schulenburg became a company vocational school for various medical professions and was recognised as a university of applied sciences in 1974. Due to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the city of Gera’s endeavours to sell the villa, the MediFa, as it was also known, had to move out of Haus Schulenburg in 1990.
