The covered gateway to the Schulenburg estate is an elaborate sandstone structure that resembles one of van de Velde’s designs for an unrealised Nietzsche monument. The three-leaf gate made of forged and riveted iron parts, the ornamental stencil painting of the archway, which is held in place by hanging iron rods as a “Rabitz ceiling”, the large quadruple suspended lamp, the bench in front of the entrance to the chauffeur’s residence and even the geometric edging of the driveway floor were all conceived and designed by van de Velde as a unit. It is interesting to note how van de Velde found a similar formal language in both the large and the small (iron gate\/book ornament). <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

In 1997, the building was in such a poor condition that demolition was considered. However, it was possible to shore up the rotten ceiling beams, raise the ceiling and save the ornamentally painted concrete shell. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
