The company “Schulenburg & Bessler”, wool and silk weaving mill<\/h2>\n

In 1897, Paul Schulenburg founded the wool and silk weaving mill in Gera together with Alexander Bessler.
\nThe company’s economic success was based on state-of-the-art production facilities and global trade. <\/p>\n

Paul Schulenburg fell seriously ill and handed the company over to his sons Wolfgang and Richard in 1930.
\nHe died in 1937. <\/p>\n

The sons continued to run the business until the end of the Second World War.
\nIn 1946, they were expropriated by the Soviet military administration.
\nThe factory was then continued as VEB Geraer Wollen- und Seidenweberei (Gewosei). <\/p>\n

Horticultural business Paul Schulenburg<\/h2>\n

In 1919, Paul Schulenburg commissioned Henry van de Velde to design the buildings for a horticultural business on a 20,000 m\u00b2 hillside site to the west of Haus Schulenburg:<\/p>\n

A gardener’s house, elaborate greenhouses and a water lily pond, which served to irrigate the outdoor plantings via a cascade of water down the slope and supplied the fountain on the west side of the house.
\nThe site manager was Thilo Schoder.
\nIn later years, further installations were added, designed by other architects. <\/p>\n

Schulenburg is said to have owned the largest orchid collection in Germany.
\nSeveral new flower varieties have emerged from the farm. <\/p>\n

The head gardener was the orchid and dahlia grower Hermann Sandhack.
\nIn 1927, Sandhack designed the famous dahlia garden in Gera, for which Thilo Schoder designed the fountain in 1930. <\/p>\n

After the property was sold by Paul Schulenburg’s sons in 1935, the new owner had the greenhouses demolished.
\nHermann Sandhack, a medicinal plant specialist, became head of the famous Madaus Gardens (supplier to the pharmaceutical company Madaus) in Dresden. <\/p>\n
